Acing Math

Response to a friend having problems with math.

I had problems passing math 112. I took the class three times before I passed it. You noted that you don't need math, and I completely agree. When you go to college you will learn a trade or knowledge that benefits a trade, however, you are also proving your ability to learn and comprehend outside of your sphere of knowledge. If you are not great at math you will have to man-up (not being sexist) and figure out how to kick maths ass. In doing so you will prove that you are a good job candidate. With that said here are my suggestions for passing math.

  1. Go to class, and ask questions. Furthermore, when someone poorly explains the solution be extroverted and make them clarify.
  2. Do your work. In the computer classes it is easy to say "I'll go on Tuesday, or I can finish it before the party, etc." Go to your scheduled lab (your teacher will be there) and do your work at the lab. If you miss a question don't accept a 90 redo it when possible.
  3. Seek tutoring! Student services as well as the math department offer tutoring. Keep up with your tutoring sessions to show work ethic if you have a close grade.
  4. Talk to the main professor. Often times she or he can explain solutions better or can offer good advice. When you show up to class, ask questions, submit your work on time, and seek outside help it is hard for a teacher to fail you.

My last point is more philosophical let go of feeling stupid. Most people who feel stupid have one up on most of the world, because they have the ability to think outside themselves. Thinking about how other people think is a gift. For those type of people it can be hard to speak up, because they know how others around them think and judge. As a general rule, if you think your stupid your probably not, but if the fear of being perceived as stupid keeps you from asking questions then how will you ever be smart.
